What Can Brain Imaging Tell Us About the Developing Child's Brain?

In this trio of talks, investigators from the Kanwisher and Saxe labs at MIT describe an ongoing study, funded by the Ellison Medical Foundation, which uses MRI technology to study brain development in typical children and children with autism. Nancy Kanwisher provides background information about fMRI scanning and what her lab has discovered about how the normal adult brain processes information about faces. Daniel Dilks describes how the research team has overcome the challenges posed by performing fMRI scans on young children, and he and Rebecca Saxe then outline preliminary findings about face processing and the development of a Theory of Mind in young children.
