you can always click on the "share" link below the video and download it if you'd like. Also, with the flash video, you should be able to scroll with the play bar to any point in the video once it's downloaded the video.

Useful videos. Would be nice to have them in a format that permitted scrolling. As they are, there is no way I can discern for fast forwarding or backtracking within the video. My attempts result in having to start the video from the very beginning once again.

Machine shop 1 Machining Skills for Prototype Development
3:41 Basic 1 Intro to AI shop bridgeport milling machine grinders, buffers, polishers, deburring wheel drill press lathes bandsaw belt sander
3:45 Layout Techniques mark locations for grooves, shoulders, slots, holes
sketches-numbers for each feature you want to make "you just don't think quite as clearly in shop as elsewhere. bits of metal, tools, flying around…" sketch outside of shop=fewer mistakes.
spray surface with blue layout fluid. light coat. scratch through paint to mark surface with scribe.
simple, common tools for layout square scriber parallels-more accurate way to measure than square caliper automatic center punch compass transfer: locating bolt holes in existing part with bolt hole center punch blind holes: don't go all the way through with "heinle.." transfer punches unthreaded blind holes sheet metal: plotter
4:01 Basic Tools Drill Press: motor, transmission, drill chuck diff b/t hand drill & drill press = enough structure to hold chuck & drills perpendicular to part you are working on levers to change speed lever to feeding quill up and down by hand controls for engaging power feed work on larger parts by unlocking head and rotating it. access to much larger area. pinch clamp= up locks head in place, down releases for rotation. table has similar clamp to move table out of way. base has T slots to attach part 3-4 feet high. X-Y table add-on allows to clamp part securely, then make final adjustments using handwheels vice on table to handle smaller parts
4:06 locating and drilling holes allign spindle with center punch mark center finder: in chuck, bring it down and put end into punch hole. If there is a step b/t body and end of tool, they are not alligned. correct for this by turning feed handle to move entire bed into allignment. run fingers up and down sides of tool to check until you can't feel the transition in tool.
start drill with center drill=short and stiff. will not deflect significantly to get an accurate start to the hole. (cool little graphics tidbit showing drill bit) finish with longer drill bit.
tapping holes for threaded holes, use drill for alligment. cutting fluid for softer alloys metal/steel.
"I minimize my use because of toxicity." 4:19-end.

To explain in a little more detail:
Although you can’t actually “fast forward,” you can navigate through the video by first doing a left-click-and-hold on the circular marker and then drag it to the place in the video you want to be. When you release the marker, the current time in the progression of the video will be updated. Obviously, this only works in the part of the video that has been loaded.-eef

hello, it looks like the .flv is working (although you’ll need a stand alone flash player to view it) but there appears to be something wrong with the download link. If you are able to get the source file to download completely, I just noticed it made mine a .avi when it should be a .wmv. Just change the extension to .wmv and it should play. I’ll have our developers look into this. Thanks, MIT TechTV

I was surprised that there was no mention of a surface plate and cube or angle for marking out with a scribing block or a height gauge.

Thankyou MIT. Thankyou very very much.

Hi,
Great series but I would like to download it. I made an account. Neither the flash or the wmv will only download part of it, then the download locks up. I think I have tried everything. Any ideas out there.
Thanks

Mostly good information but basic with a few exceptions. Well done…any more coming? How about threading, internal and external with lathe?

Use of double sided tape is mostly unknown by most machinists but covered well here. You neglected to say what what it specifically is and where to get it….it is carpet tape available at any hardware store. Recommend using the variety with fiberglass as it is easier to remove when done.

This is an excellent introductory video to the world of machining! I was wondering if I could share this video by embedding it into the blog for our website? You can find it at HTTP://www.industrialsupplyco.net
Thanks

These blind hole transfers have no threads as these do.
Posted almost 5 years by Anonymous 00:17:30
You can also use "blind hole transfers inserted into the hole, laid on the transfer piece and tapped with a mallet.

This is not as accurate as the hammer punch, because the point is free to move side to side by a fraction of an inch

1. You cannot hold the caliper 100% straight, therefore your measurement is incorrect. 2. You DO NOT use a measurement-tool as a scriber. You damage your caliper, and it is now useless as a measurement-tool !

Plenty of modern cutting fluids are non-toxic, don’t let the video scare you away from using them!

…The video isn’t loading properly. I can watch somewhere around 3 seconds before it stops playing. Then I have to wait another 10 minutes to watch three seconds. Yes, i tried letting it load overnight. I got 10 seconds that way. No, my internet is not that slow. What to do?
