Kate followed-up on a project she began the summer of 2008 to bring safe drinking water to rural villages and also empower the women of the villages to take up an entrepreneurial role in selling clean water in Ghana. Sadik established the Nsutaman Community Library, the only library in the town of Nsuta, Ghana. Sadik convinced Books for Africa to donate 7,000 books and two computers to the library. Next, he negotiated with a member of Parliament to donate and renovate a building to house the library. Sadik subsequently arranged for students at the nearby university to cover library shifts and build shelves. Sadik was anointed with the honorary title of Development Chief responsible for Student Affairs in January 2008 at the official opening of the library. 164 tag:techtv.mit.edu,:Array/217847060 2009-06-16 16:13:54 -0400 MIT Public Service Center Videos Mario Bollini ’09 Course 2 participated in the MIT Public Service Fellowship program, the MIT IDEAS Competition, and in the service learning class, SP. 784, Wheelchair Design for the Developing World. Mario helped design the Figure-Eight drive train, a multi-geared system for mobility-impaired handcycle users that allows them to switch between two gear ratios when traversing various types of terrain in Kenya. Mario was also part of the IDEAS Team, Leveraged Freedom Chair, which received the International Technology Award in 2008 for their design of a wheelchair that can be used indoors and then switched over to lever-powered mode for more efficiency over rugged terrain. 120 tag:techtv.mit.edu,:Array/217827920 2009-06-16 16:12:08 -0400 MIT Public Service Center Videos Alia Whitney-Johnson ’09, participated in the MIT Public Service Fellowship program and Student Leaders in Service program, part of Americorps. Alia founded Emerge Global to help empower young girls and women through jewelry making, and provide them with the skills necessary to become confident, respected, self-reliant members of society in the wake of the tsunami in 2004 and general disrespect of women in Sri Lanka. Scot was also part of the 2008 IDEAS Team, SolSource Project, which received the Yunus Challenge Award for their innovative design of a solar cooker intended to withstand high winds on the plateau of Western China while remaining light enough to be portable. Tish and her team of fellow inventors won a 2008 IDEAS Competition Award for their design of the Leveraged Freedom Chair. While taking the service learning course "Wheelchair Design for Developing Countries" in her freshman year, Tish was inspired to make a difference in the lives of the physically challenged. She has traveled to Tanzania several times after receiving Public Service Fellowships from the PSC to implement another one of her ideas of a small-business wheelchair, in which the physically disabled are given the opportunity to operate businesses from their wheelchair. He then became Non-Executive Chairman of the separate entity, CSFB Private Equity, (overseeing a $2 b portfolio) and was also a member of the Board of Directors of the parent company, Credit Suisse Group, Zurich until full retirement in May 2001. Jack now serves as a Senior Advisor to Credit Suisse. Available for advice and consultation by management. Since retirement, he has divided his time between philanthropic and business/investment activity. He serves on the Board of Directors of Corning, Inc, where he is Chairman of the Finance Committee and a member of the Governance and Nominating Committee. His activities include 7 board or Advisory Council memberships in charitable or not-for-profit organizations including; The Safe Water Network, The Foundation for Recognition and Inspiration of Science & Technology (FIRST) which has established hands-on science programs in 800 high schools. Before beginning his investment-banking career, Jack served in the U.S. Government as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Affairs from 1972-1974 (a Presidential Appointment), under Secretary George P. Shultz and as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Developing Nations from 1970-1972 under Secretary John B. Connally. His responsibilities included the primary role for the U.S. participation in Supranational Organizations, such as the World Bank, Treasury representative on the boards of OPIC and the Inter-American Foundation, chairing the National Advisory Council of International Financial Policy, and management of the Exchange Stabilization Fund of the Treasury. Prior to his Treasury experience Jack spent 8 years in Citibank in New York and Latin America, (Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia and Peru) running Citibank operations on the West Coast of South America, and opening the first branch of an American Bank in Bolivia at the age of 28. Jack, a native of Brookline, Massachusetts, graduated magna-cum laude from Harvard University in 1958 and was a National Science Fellow of the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the field of International Finance and Business from 1968-1970. (Completed all PhD course work and oral exams – except thesis.) Jack has been active over his career in numerous Civic activities.
