Oral history interview with Barry Vercoe, MIT Professor Emeritus of Media Arts and Sciences at MIT, founding member of the MIT Media Lab, and computer music pioneer and composer. Interviewed by Forrest Larson and Mark Ethier, MIT Video Productsion studio. Topics include: family and growing up in New Zealand, playing cornet and saxophone in brass bands, Renaissance vocal music, studying mathematics and music at the University of Auckland, PhD in music composition with Ross Lee Finney at the University of Michigan, serial technique, Alban Berg and Anton Webern, introduction to electronic music, Mario Davidovsky's Synchronisms, teaching at Oberlin Conservatory with John Clough, postdoctoral work at Princeton with Godfrey Winham, Max Mathews and Bell Labs, MUSIC4 and variants, the beginnings of synthesized music, Guggenheim Fellowship and residency at IRCAM, Synthetic Performer, GROOVE, arrival at MIT, MIT Experimental Music Studio, Csound and MUSIC11, Marcus Thompson, the First International Computer Music Conference and its predecessors, David Wessel, Andy Moorer, John Grey, Pete Samson, the evolution of the computer as an instrument.
