The Big Road - Port Au Prince
Here is one clip of footage from Port Au Prince two months after the earthquake. A small team of MIT alumni, professors, fellows, students, and staff went to Haiti in March 2010 to help formulate a housing reconstruction plan. Here is one clip from our visit.
Boulevard Jean-Jacques Dessalines, or La Grand Rue, is the commercial heart of the city.
Jean-Jacques Dessalines was a leader of the Haitian Revolution and the first ruler of an independent Haiti under the 1801 constitution. Jean-Jacques Dessalines was Toussaint L'Ouverture's principal lieutenant. After the betrayal and capture of Toussaint Louverture, Dessalines became the leader of the revolution, defeating French troops in 1803. When Haiti became an independent nation in 1804, Dessalines was chosen by a council of generals to assume the office of Governor-General. Soon after, he proclaimed himself Emperor and ruled the country until his assassination in 1806.
